Yesterday night we went to the Ocean Breeze for family fun night here on base and it was actually pretty nice. It was a kid themed buffet (the eggplant parm was delish!), they played kid movies and had a clown making ballon animals; Lukie got a little scared but he loved his balloon penguin he got :)
Afterwards feeling nice and full, we stopped at our lodge's playground so that we could run around with the boys...and it was here that we came face-to-face with this creature!
While playing I heard what I thought was a bird landing in the tree above us. Of course by this time it was already getting dark out, so when I looked up and realized it wasn't a bird, I truly thought this weird, hairy looking thing was a monkey. A cute little monkey. So of course I call Cali over to show him the "cute, little monkey" in the tree . I'm not sure how, but slowly we start to realize it's NOT a cute, little monkey, but instead a freakishly large BAT. The biggest, hairiest bat I've ever seen to be exact. In south Texas we're used to seeing the Mexican free-tailed bats but this monkey-like bat was far from the small, black bats I'm used to. I think what creeped me out the most was the way it moved around the tree. It literally swung itself from limb to limb with such agility just like the cute, little monkeys I've seen on TV do...it was creepy! Also, I should've snapped my own pics of it but I was too scared-I just kept imagining this huge bat flying out of the tree and clinging onto my back :/ Any how, turns out that these large, furry bats are harmless fruit bats and apparently not as bad as the insanely large spiders on island, NOT looking forward to seeing those! :O So, now that I know they're harmless I'll try not to freak out about it next time I see one.
