Now that we're in the house I've finally been able to start cooking again. Not gonna lie, we could probably eat out every day because the food is just THAT good and doesn't sit heavy in your stomach like eating typical fast food does, know what I mean? But, while eating out is fun and trying new foods is even better, it gets expensive :(
I've been cooking random things here and there (made a lasagna with shiitake mushrooms, and that was an interesting flavor) and even some chocolate chip pancakes since Cali had been asking for them since his birthday as I didn't get to make him his yearly birthday breakfast since we were in the hotel and still hadn't gone out to grocery shop.
Not only did I make his "special" pancakes, I also made a big ol' pot of beans! Beans=bean and cheese tacos--->makes my baby boy happy :)

So while the beans were cooking up on the stove and the whole house started smelling like beans (you know that smell), I couldn't help but think of my mami. Beans on the stove are a staple at her house and every time we'd go over she'd make Cali bean and cheese tacos :) Yea not the fanciest of meals, but def Mexican home cooking at its finest. And I guess I must have been on a nostalgic high or something because this same morning I made papas con huevo, another one of my mommas best. And if you're wondering by now, geez, this girl is missing her mom huh? Yes, yes I am; and I'm so glad I got to talk to her today even if I did wake her up. But of course, as any good momma would do, she said it was okay and pretended she was not half asleep just so we could talk :) lol
And since we're on the subject of beans, can I tell you about the AMAZING bean flavored shaved ice I had when we went to the aquarium?! Sounds random and gross to some, but to me anything that "doesn't sound good" is worth a try. So yea, while out at Bise Village (refer to my post on our trip to the aquarium) a local was selling shaved ice from what appeared to be his back yard.
Sometimes there are "English" versions of menus or sometimes there are hints to what flavor things are-for example pictures of certain fruits, etc. But of course this being in this small village nothing was in English, which is cool; I'm the one that needs to learn Japanese.
Lucky for me, as this one man and his daughter were leaving the stand, he showed me what he had ordered and gave me a thumbs up...bingo, that's what I'm gonna order!
As for the flavor, umm, well it tasted like beans? But again, not in a not good way. The beans reminded me of kidney beans, which I happen to also like, and whatever the beans were "marinated" in was mildly sweet. So overall, it was refreshing and just a bit sweet, nothing like the insanely sweet syrups typically used for shaved ice. Plus, how many times have you been able to eat a raspa that provides you with some protein, fiber, iron and other good for you nutrients? Jackpot.
